We’re now getting an update on Mauricio Pochettino’s job security every week from Fabrizio Romano.
Suffice to say, that’s not a position you want to be in.
Another defeat, this time to an Everton squad with far less talent than us, has ramped up the pressure another notch, and Romano is on hand to tell us just how sweaty Pochettino is getting under his cap.
The good news for the Argentine is that, just like after the defeat to Manchester United, Romano has been to tell us that there’s nothing to worry about.
“Many Chelsea fans will be disappointed after two bad results in the space of a few days, with defeats away to Manchester United and Everton. That’s now just one win in the last five games in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and of course that kind of form is not good enough and needs to improve,” Romano wrote his Daily Briefing for Caughtoffside.
“Still, there is nothing specific as of now in terms of targets for Pochettino – the general concept is that this long-term project is still being protected and backed by Chelsea. I’m not aware of any specific pressure to finish in a certain position in the table this year or anything like that.
“Of course they need to change this situation, it’s obvious; but Chelsea insist on their position with the manager, supporting him and trusting his ideas for the long term.”
Of course, we all remember it was just the same with Graham Potter. The board backed him all the way, until they didn’t. We will hear that Pochettino is the chosen man until the day they decide to sack him.
If his target was specifically to finish in the top 4, they may as well sack him now. If it’s to finish in the top 6, well, time is running out on that front too, and it’s not even Christmas yet.
