Senior Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has vehemently responded to trolls who sparked controversy over his celebration during a remarkable five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023 group match. Shami, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament, faced baseless rumors regarding his on-field celebration.
In a viral video, Shami can be seen kneeling and touching the ground after completing his 5-wicket haul, a gesture that stirred unnecessary controversy on social media. Some claimed he wanted to pray but refrained due to potential backlash. Shami, speaking on Agenda Aaj Tak, affirmed his identity as a proud Indian and Muslim, emphasizing that no one could have stopped him from praying if he had wished to do so.
“If I wanted to pray, who could stop me? I won’t stop anyone from praying. What’s the problem in this? I will say it with pride that I am a Muslim. I will say it with pride that I am an Indian. What’s the problem in that?” Shami questioned, highlighting his right to express his faith and nationality without seeking permission.
Shami clarified that he had never prayed after taking 5-wicket hauls before, dismissing the baseless stories surrounding his celebration. He expressed his bafflement at the creation of controversies around his actions, emphasizing that he bowled with exceptional intensity during the match against Sri Lanka.
“BOWLED WITH 200 PERCENT INTENSITY”
Shami further explained that his celebration was a result of bowling with 200 percent intensity, driven by the desire to secure a 5-wicket haul. Tired after putting in considerable effort without securing a wicket, Shami kneeled as a gesture of relief and accomplishment. He criticized those misinterpreting his actions, stating they aimed to create unnecessary disturbances.
Despite the controversy, Shami’s outstanding performance in the World Cup is expected to earn him the prestigious Arjuna Award. The Gujarat Titans fast bowler, having taken an extended break post the World Cup, is set to return to action during the upcoming 2-Test series against South Africa, starting on December 26, 2023.
