10:40pm: It’s a two-year deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided (on X)
10:23pm: The Astros are signing catcher Víctor Caratini, report Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (X link). Houston GM Dana Brown has made clear the team will bring in a #2 option while turning the primary catching job to Yainer Diaz. The deal is pending a physical and financial terms are still unreported.
Caratini has spent the last two seasons with the Brewers. Milwaukee acquired the switch-hitter from the Padres shortly before the start of the 2022 campaign. Caratini slumped to a .199/.300/.342 line during his first year but rebounded with a solid .259/.327/.383 showing a season ago. Working as the backup to William Contreras, Caratini played in 62 games and tallied 226 plate appearances.
A first-time free agent, the Puerto Rico native turned 30 in August. He’s one of the younger catchers in the class and has a shot at a low-cost two-year pact. While he doesn’t bring much power to the table, Caratini has solid bat-to-ball skills and has received strong marks for his pitch framing. He doesn’t have a particularly strong throwing arm, though.
More to come.
