Rotherham United confirm the appointment of new head coach Leam Richardson as the permanent replacement for the sacked Matt Taylor.
The Millers currently find themselves sitting bottom in the Championship table with 13 points taken from 20 games and are eight points from safety.
Richardson guided the Latics to a League One title, beating Rotherham to it back in 2022, however, ended up being sacked in November that year having had a slow start to the season.
Matt Taylor came into Rotherham in October 2022, replacing long-serving boss Paul Warne who departed for League One Derby.
He had kept them in the Championship earlier this summer, but was axed in November having just won twice in the first 16 league games.
Richardson now hopes he can help guide the club to safety, but it’ll be a tough challenge, especially considering his new side haven’t won away since winning against Sheffield United 13 months ago. Ouch.

CLUB STATEMENT
Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Leam Richardson as the club’s new Head Coach.
Following a long and meticulous interview process which has seen a number of high-calibre candidates considered, it was agreed by the Board that Leam’s credentials and vision for the project were most closely aligned with our own and he arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium as part of a restructuring of the football setup at the club.
Richardson signs a deal until the summer of 2026 at AESSEAL New York Stadium as the club’s first ‘modern-day’ Head Coach and arrives with experience in the second tier with Wigan Athletic, with whom who he gained promotion to the level as they finished as champions of Sky Bet League One in the 2021/22 campaign and earned the honour of the EFL League One Manager of the Season.
The 44-year-old – who hails from Leeds – can also call upon managerial experience with Accrington Stanley.
Richardson has taken charge of 155 EFL fixtures as a manager – including during caretaker roles – in a coaching career which followed time as a professional player starting in 1997 and concluding with Stanley in 2013.
A press conference unveiling Leam as the club’s new head coach will be held at AESSEAL New York Stadium this evening.
This is how fans reacted as Rotherham confirm the appointment of their new head coach as replacement for Matt Taylor…
@X_WXLL1: “A number of high-calibre candidates considered, it was agreed by the Board that Leam’s credentials and vision for the project were most closely aligned with our own” – Bollocks, we were turned down by 5 managers 😂
@RUFC_1884: Good luck Leam. Gets my backing.. Rotherham fans will forgive most things as long as we see 100% effort and commitment 👍🏻 💪
@IBradders: Like Warne at the start of his reign LR CANNOT be held responsible for our impending relegation this season so give him time, a couple of transfer windows before judging g him.
@joshuarogers870: Unreal manager, you’ve got yourselves a good one there #wafc #rufc
@hicksy_rufc: See what happens, but whatever the outcome at least he had the balls to take over.
@pocketr05106242: Some of the comments on here are just embarrassing. Some of our fans are just pathetic. Welcome Leam and good luck.
@__IrufcI__: Say what you want about him, he took the job. He is willing to give us a chance, similar to Warne who did well here. All the best Leam
@milldogs4: all jokes aside let’s get behind the bloke. got nothing to lose everything to gain. best of luck and welcome leam 👍🏻
@GallenLeung: All the best Leam ❤️ top bloke
@CraigyBoyBes: Good luck to him. Welcome to a club that is stuck in the 1990’s. Clearly likes a challenge so respect him for that #rufc
@JoshuaJPE: He’s taken on the most difficult job in the league. Let’s get behind him.
@TheTWord90: Not who I wanted to take charge and it’s taken an age to get done, but I’ll back the “head coach”.
@baggieboy682: hopefully not the new manager bounce tues night 🤣🤣
@NeilOakley16: Good luck pal 👍 UP THE MILLERS ⚽️
@babylonrass: Has to be an upgrade, Leam is a Yorkshireman v Taylor from the Dark Side 🤷♂️
@kimhayw36231211: Welcome Leam. 100% behind this man UTM ❤
@paulh1002: Welcome to Rotherham Leam really hope it works out
@newyorkmillers: Great appointment! Welcome to #rufc Leam
@Danny260214: I’ll back him 100% he’s taken the job when nobody else would but this has been an absolute disgrace from start to finish and in my eyes unforgivable from TS.
@whoppo9: Head coach, means DOF then
@Johnboyuk10: Top Class Manager and Top Bloke, you’ve got a good one there, good luck Leam 🙌
@babylonrass: About bleeding time
@MillersTomO: Hellefuckingllujah!
@Bluecat74Davies: Top bloke ! Really hope he does well for you. Good luck Leam! 💙
@jamesta08972346: Low key a good appointment I think but the way the board have gone about is Sunday league level stuff. One month to appoint a manager in middle of a season.
@rknappy98: Fair play to him for taking it on and he’ll get my 100% backing. Now deal with the next task at hand – sack the board 👍🏻
@Dean_Webster94: Thank God this whole shitshow is over. Last few weeks have opened a lot of our eyes to how poorly this club is run behind the scenes imo. Fair play to LR, shows some bollocks to take this job on right now, 100% fully behind him. Up the Millers. #rufc
@MattSpilly: Now it’s up to us to get behind the new manager, one who actually wanted the job. We know this season is more than likely going to end in relegation. In time let’s see what Richardson brings. UTM. #rufc
